Why it's here
In 1902 Émile Gallé, the great glass artist of Nancy, painted a spray of white anemones onto a Perrier-Jouët bottle. The design was set aside for decades, then revived for the house's finest cuvée, and it remains the most beautiful bottle in Champagne. This edition arrives in a box by the Italian studio Formafantasma, which makes it one of the few bottles that needs no wrapping.
The object
Belle Époque is the top wine of a house founded in 1811, led by Chardonnay and known for a floral, weightless style. The 2016 is pale gold, with white flowers and white-fleshed fruit on the nose and a very fine bead. The anemones are enamelled onto the glass by the same method used on the original.
At the table
Serve it cool, in a wide glass, at the start of an evening that matters. It is the bottle to bring when you want the host to remember who brought it. Most people keep the empty.
