Bottega Veneta built its name on a single idea: weave strips of soft leather by hand and let that be the only mark. Its old motto was that your own initials are enough. Half a century on, the weave is recognised across a room by anyone who knows leather and means nothing to anyone who does not. Of all the briefcases we carry, this is the purest example of a signature made from craft alone.
The object
The body is calf leather cut into strips and woven by hand, a technique the house calls Intrecciato. The weave makes the bag both strong and soft, so it holds its shape without stiffness. It closes with a double zip and carries small metal details at the handles.
Living with it
It has room for a laptop, papers and a day's necessities, and it sits well against a dark overcoat. Woven leather softens beautifully. Store it stuffed and upright, and it will look better in ten years than it does new.
