Why it's here

On a boat, anything left on a table ends up on the deck. This ashtray solves that with a soft, weighted leather base that grips the surface and will not scratch it. We like objects made for one particular way of living, and this could only have been designed by someone who has tried to enjoy a cigar at anchor in a swell.

The object

A removable bowl of chrome-plated brass sits in a padded ring of calf leather, embossed with a small seagull. The base is heavy for its size and slightly yielding, like a beanbag. It comes in several strong colours, bright yellow among them.

Living with it

It works just as well on a terrace table in the wind or on the arm of a garden chair. Lift out the bowl to empty and rinse it. Wipe the leather with a damp cloth after a day in salt air.
