Why it's here
A good host once kept a cigarette case filled for guests. Niceworkshop, the Seoul studio known for building furniture out of construction hardware, has made the present-day version. Left on a terrace table, it gives a guest who smokes a small ceremony: press the nut, and a single cigarette rises to meet the hand. People remember the house where that happened.
The object
The box is cut from aluminium plate and held together entirely by bolts and nuts, with no glue anywhere, so it can be taken apart, cleaned and rebuilt for as long as you own it. A nut on the front works an internal lift that presents one cigarette at a time. At 1.6 kilograms it stays exactly where you put it, in any wind.
Living with it
It belongs outdoors: on the patio table, beside the ashtray, filled before anyone arrives. Even guests who don't smoke pick it up to see how it works. Wipe it down now and then. The metal needs nothing else.
