Anyone who has stayed at the Ritz in Paris remembers the scent of the entrance hall: warm amber, a little pepper, a trace of jasmine. This is that scent, sold by the hotel itself. For those who have been, it brings the place back at once. For those who have not, it simply makes a hallway smell like somewhere very well looked after.
The object
The bottle is glass lacquered in white, with a gilded emblem based on the key that once hung in every room of the hotel. Thin rattan reeds draw the fragrance up and release it slowly, with no flame and nothing to switch on.
Living with it
Stand it near the front door, where it greets people, or in a guest bedroom. Turn the reeds every week or so to refresh it. A bottle lasts several months.
