Ask a bartender anywhere for a benchmark sherried Scotch and this is the name that comes back. The Macallan 18 has held that position for decades because it does not change. A well-stocked house needs one bottle that every guest recognises and none will refuse, and this is ours.

The object

The spirit is distilled in unusually small copper stills and then spends eighteen years in oak casks seasoned with Oloroso sherry. The deep mahogany colour comes entirely from the wood. It tastes of dried fruit, ginger and orange peel, finishing on toasted oak.

At the table

Serve it neat in a tumbler or a tulip glass after dinner, with dark chocolate or nothing at all. It is the dependable answer when someone asks what you have, and it is a fine present for a host.
