Why it's here
Most people know S.T. Dupont for lighters and pens. Fewer know it started in 1872 making leather cases, and built travelling trunks for much of Europe's high society before it made anything in metal. This briefcase comes from the workshop that keeps that first trade alive. It is the insider's Dupont, with a single round metal clasp as its only ornament.
The object
The leather is full-grain calf, embossed with a scale pattern and then darkened by hand, so the black has depth and every case is shaded a little differently. Inside are two main compartments, a zipped pocket and four smaller ones. It measures 38 by 28 centimetres and is slim enough to carry under the arm.
Living with it
The texture hides wear, so it suits someone who actually travels. It looks best with dark tailoring and a heavy coat. A little neutral cream once or twice a year keeps the patina alive.
