Bang & Olufsen, Beosound 2 Speakers

[Acquire from Bang & Olufsen]

A speaker with no front and no back.

Designed in Denmark · One piece of aluminium, gold tone · Sound in every direction

Why it's here

Nearly every speaker has to face you, which means it ends up pushed against a wall. The Beosound 2 sends sound out in a full circle, so it can stand in the middle of a table or a room like a vase. Bang & Olufsen has made audio equipment worth looking at since 1925, and the Museum of Modern Art once gave the company an exhibition of its own. This cone shows why.

The object

The body is shaped from a single piece of aluminium, with fine vertical grooves at the base where the sound escapes. At the top, a small reflector spreads the high notes evenly around the room. The controls light up as your hand approaches and stay dark the rest of the time.

Living with it

Stand it wherever people gather: a console table in the hall, the centre of a library table. Everyone hears the same thing from wherever they sit, which makes it a good speaker for company.
