Why it's here

Count the hours and your hand rests on a mouse longer than on any pen, watch or steering wheel. Yet it is usually the cheapest piece of plastic on the desk. Lunar Artefacts was started in London by an architect and a car designer who thought that was absurd, and built one from the materials of a good watch strap and a good car.

The object

The base is solid aluminium, polished by hand. The top is wrapped in navy French calf that darkens where your palm sits. The scroll wheel is metal and turns with a fine ratchet click. Nothing is glued, so every part can be opened, serviced or replaced, and the sensor tracks on glass.

Living with it

It has real weight, which steadies the hand, and it connects by cable, Bluetooth or wireless receiver. On a desk it looks like something left there on purpose. In a few years the leather will be yours alone.
