Why it's here

Kurt Josef Zalto comes from six generations of glassmakers and already had one famous glass to his name. Then he began again, and put a kink in the bowl. It is rare for an old craft to produce a form nobody has seen before, and rarer for that form to work better than what came before it. This one does both.

The object

Each glass is blown by mouth into a wooden mould and is so thin it almost disappears in the hand. The sharp bend halfway up the bowl spreads the wine wide when you swirl it, which opens the aroma faster. The set brings four of the No. 3 red wine glasses together with the No. 7 decanter, which carries the same line.

Living with it

This is a table for four, set once and used for years. The decanter suits young reds that need air. Wash the glasses in warm water and dry them with a linen cloth, holding the bowl and never twisting the stem.
