Bienaimé, Monsieur Perfume
[Acquire from Bienaimé 1935]
A Paris perfumer from 1935, back on the dresser.
Made in France · Fluted glass flacon, refillable · 75 ml
Why it's here
Robert Bienaimé composed one of the great perfumes of the early century for Houbigant, then opened his own house in Paris in 1935. The name went quiet for decades and was recently revived with real care, working from his original designs. Hardly anyone you meet will be wearing it. That, and a bottle that could have stood on a dressing table in the thirties, is why we chose it.
The object
Monsieur opens fresh, with bergamot and verbena, and dries down to patchouli and sandalwood: clean, dry and quietly old-fashioned. The flacon is ribbed glass with an oxblood domed cap, taken from the house's Art Deco archive, and it can be refilled when empty.
Living with it
Two sprays in the morning will see out the working day. It suits a shirt and jacket more than a T-shirt. Keep the bottle where it can be seen, and refill it to keep it for good.
