Deepti Barth, Crash Culatta Boots
[Acquire]
Leather made to crack, on purpose.
Handmade in Germany · Resin-coated horse leather · Goodyear-stitched sole
Why it's here
Every other maker on these pages tries to keep leather from cracking. This one coats horsehide in resin so that it fractures like the glaze on old porcelain, and goes on fracturing as you walk. The boots that result look as if they have a century behind them on the first day. We wanted one object that treats wear itself as the finish.
The object
The upper is horse culatta, the dense leather from the hindquarters, sealed under a glossy black coat that breaks into fine lines wherever the foot bends. The sole is stitched on in the Goodyear manner, so it can be replaced, and carries a small metal inlay. Each pair is cut and sewn by hand.
Living with it
These suit black tailoring, heavy wool and long coats. The pattern of cracks will be yours alone, drawn by how you walk. Do not try to polish it out. Wipe with a damp cloth and leave the surface to do its work.
