Why it's here

We put clean air beside clean water as the first comforts of a house. You breathe some twenty thousand times a day, most of them indoors, and indoor air is often worse than the street outside. This machine filters a room continuously, and it heats in winter and cools in summer, so one object does the work of three. In nickel and gold it is also the best-looking version Dyson makes.

The object

Air is drawn in at the perforated base, passed through a sealed filter that captures 99.97 percent of fine particles, and pushed out smoothly through the open loop. Sensors read the air and adjust the speed without being asked. There are no visible blades and very little noise.

Living with it

Put it in the room where you sleep or work, leave it on automatic and close the door. Change the filter when it tells you to.
