Grimaud, N°200 : Cartes à Jouer
[Acquire]
A deck of cards from the house that set the standard.
Made in France · Heavy card with gold foil · 54 cards, bridge and poker
Why it's here
Everyone owns a pack of cards, and almost everyone owns a poor one. Baptiste-Paul Grimaud began making cards in Paris in the middle of the nineteenth century and is credited with the rounded corner. This edition revives his house at full quality. A proper deck on the table changes the tone of an evening before anyone has dealt, and it costs less than the wine.
The object
The cards are printed in France on thick stock, with the court figures redrawn by the illustrator Julie Serre and picked out in gold foil. A special varnish makes them slide and fan smoothly. They come in a pale blue box sealed with a gold medallion.
Living with it
Keep one deck for play and it will break in nicely over a few months. It is an excellent present to bring to a house where people still sit down to bridge, gin or poker after dinner.
