Why it's here

Silver bars come in two kinds. Minted bars are stamped by machine and look printed. Cast bars are poured molten into a mould, so each one cools with its own ripples and edges. We chose a cast bar because it looks and feels like what it is: a lump of precious metal, heavy in the hand, with a crest pressed into the top.

The object

Germania Mint grew out of a family coin business founded in Poland in 1986. The bar is ten troy ounces of silver at four-nines purity, higher than most. Each is numbered, and a hologram on the back lets you check it against the mint's register.

Living with it

Unlike gold, a silver bar can sit on a desk as a paperweight without causing alarm, and it is a pleasure to pick up. It will tarnish slowly in open air. Many owners prefer it that way, and the value is unaffected.
