Why it's here

Behind the Ritz on Place Vendôme there is a formal garden that most passers-by never see. This candle is the hotel's attempt to bottle it: green leaves, fig and lily on a warm evening. We chose it for the vessel as much as the scent. It is matte white porcelain, fluted like a column, with a gilded sun on the lid, and it is worth keeping long after the wax has gone.

The object

The pot is biscuit porcelain, fired without glaze so it has the dry, chalky surface of classical sculpture. The lid carries the Sun King's emblem, which appears on the ironwork around the square outside the hotel. The candle weighs 380 grams and has a cotton wick.

Living with it

Burn it for an hour or two before guests arrive, in the hall or the drawing room. Trim the wick each time. When it is finished, wash out the pot and use it for matches, pens or flowers.
