Sophie Buhai left fashion to work in silver, and she has a habit of taking the plainest things a person owns and making them as well as they can be made. A comb is used daily and usually costs nothing. Hers is solid sterling with a long black tassel, and it turns thirty seconds at the mirror into something you actually notice.

The object

The comb is cast and finished by hand in sterling silver, about four inches long and heavy for its size. A four-and-a-half-inch tassel hangs from one end, which gives the hand something to hold and the eye something soft against the metal.

Living with it

Leave it on the dresser, where it reads as a small sculpture, or carry it in an inside jacket pocket. Silver dulls and brightens with handling. Polish it now and then, or let it darken and keep the marks of use.
